Jeffrey Sachs Addresses Universities’ Role in Global Public Health

On March 29th, Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia, addressed students at Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institution regarding “Scaling Up Public Health in Low-Income Countries: The Challenges and Role of Universities” . The event was the capstone lecture of Tri-I UAEM’s Global Health series.

Tri-I’s earlier Forum on Neglected Diseases introduced students to the topic of neglected diseases in the context of biomedicine. But Professor Sachs introduced our community to the economic issues involved in development, particularly in scaling up public health in the world’s poorest countries. Sachs described successful eradication campaigns in sub-Saharan Africa. The discussion also focused on how universities could form innovative alliances to subsidize capacity-building and more robust public health infrastructure in the developing world.
