UAEM Asks Wisconsin to Demand Reintroduction of Drug in Thailand

UAEM, along with University of Wisconsin students from SGAC, AMSA, and the UW Global Health Interest Group, sent the following public letter on April 26th to the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), the licensing arm of the University of Wisconsin. The letter was sent to coincide with the international actions protesting Abbott’s withdrawal of medicine registrations in Thailand. Abbott’s move is retaliation agianst the Thai government for issuing compulsory licenses on several critical drugs, including the HIV/AIDS medication Aluvia.

WARF owns the critical IP on one of the seven drugs Abbott is using as political leverage against Thailand (Zemplar). UAEM is asking WARF to take a public stand against this use of its IP, in accordance with principles on ethical IP management that WARF recently signed.
